Walking on Air

The concept for the stair came from wanting to create a stair that gave the impression of walking on air as one ascended up to the mezzanine dining area.

This coupled with inspiration from the Memphis movement, results in a surprisingly playful stair, one that encourages one to make the journey to the mezzanine dining area.

The tricky bit was defining a perforated pattern that would take as much material out of the sheet metal whilst still maintaining a level of stability that would take the loads building control were after.

STAC also wanted a complete spiral, one without a half landing & one that led the eye uninterrupted to the first floor. This was by no means easy, however we managed to incorporate a half landing whilst manipulating the design within the regs to achieve a continuous stair, handrail and balustrade, a seamless sweep up into the air.
